Credit Report Audit Checklist
Before sending a dispute, organize what you know. This checklist is for reviewing your own reports and recording information that deserves closer examination.
First pass: get the records
- ☐ Get a current report from each nationwide credit bureau at AnnualCreditReport.com.
- ☐ Save each original report and note its date.
- ☐ Compare your name, addresses and identifying details across bureaus.
- ☐ For each account, note the furnisher, account status, balance, past-due amount, payment history and important dates.
- ☐ Flag entries that do not match records you have, not merely entries you dislike.
- ☐ Collect payment receipts, account statements, court documents and other legitimate evidence.
- ☐ Record the specific field you believe is wrong and what factual correction you seek.
- ☐ Identify which bureau(s) report the issue and whether the furnisher should also be contacted.
- ☐ Keep an evidence log with submission dates, confirmation numbers and responses.
- ☐ Maintain positive payment habits while waiting for results.
